Headway House Dumfries and Galloway Association Ltd picked up £1720 from Dumfries and Galloway Housing Partnership's Community Pride Fund.

DGHP's Nithsdale District Management Committee (DMC) awarded the money to the charity to allow them to install a new fence in their grounds. The charity, although based in Dumfries, helps people right across Dumfries and Galloway.

Carron Alison, deputy manager of Headway in Dumfries and Galloway, said:

"There was an old fence in place, but it had been there for many years and it was very worn and had lots of holes in it.

"The other major issue for us was that we have a small grass area to the side of the building and dog fouling was a big problem. A lot of our attendees at Headway House use this grass area of the garden, particularly to help with their balance, and dog fouling was a real concern.

"We are so grateful to DGHP for this money, which paid entirely for the fence, as we can now use this area without worrying and the fence is much tidier now. If we hadn't received this money from DGHP it would have taken us years to fundraise for it ourselves, so we can't say thank you enough."

The charity currently has around 100 users of their services, both at Headway House itself and through community support work. Many of those using the services are also DGHP tenants. People from all over the region benefit from the services at Headway House as well as their outreach projects.

Mary Hogg, DGHP's Nithsdale DMC vice chair, added:

"As a committee we were delighted to support this project. It benefits many people, including some of our tenants. They do such a good job, and they really are making great in-roads into working closely with the surrounding community.

"We are glad they now have been able to put in place this fence, ensuring the grounds look tidy as well as protecting those using the facility."

The Community Pride Fund was first established to encourage tenants and others to work together to improve the local communities around Dumfries and Galloway.
