Housing associations, co-operatives operate across Scotland and provide a range of housing for rent or shared ownership. Collectively they manage over 200,000 houses and are becoming the biggest providers of social rented housing in Scotland. This is why we believe it is important to increase the opportunities for people to become actively involved in the management of the associations, and to ensure that they are accountable to their tenants and the wider public.
Although it can be challenging, it can also be very rewarding, knowing that you can directly improve the housing and environment in local communities. It allows you not only to offer your skills and experience, but also to develop new ones. You don’t need a wealth of experience in housing to become a Governing Body Member, just an interest in housing and community issues.
The SFHA manages a register of people with time and enthusiasm who are interested in becoming a voluntary board/committee member of Housing Associations and Co-operatives.
